Dec 18 2009 Syria Gains Gold Medal in Asian Kurash Championship
Syrian Athlete Methkal al-Jarmani 90 kg gained gold medal in kurash in the Asian Kurash Championship hosted by Kazakhstan last week with the participation of 12 states. Al-Jarmai managed to win over two Uzbek players in the first and second game and won the gold medal. Secretary of Syria's Judo Union Ahmad al-Khateeb said that most of the countries participating in the tournament are known for their strength in the kurash game, but our player was able to achieve a good result and win Gold. He added that Syria was invited to participate in the World Kurash Championship scheduled in Astana, Kazakhstan's capital next August. Syria, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan participated in the Asian Kurash Championship. Kurash is a style of jacket wrestling from the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan. Its literal translation simply means wrestle.
