Palm tree is a perennial evergreen tree
measuring up to 20 meters high. Most palms are distinguished
by their large, compound, evergreen leaves arranged at the
top of an unbranched stem.
Palms are among the best known and
extensively cultivated plant families in Syria. They have
been important to humans throughout much of history.
Palm trees were the main food for the
inhabitants of the Middle Euphrates Region who have become
experts in planting this tree.
Different species of palm trees grow in Deir
Ezzor governorate, Northeastern Syria. Some of them are
prolific trees producing from 30 to 50 kilograms of dates
every season while others are non-prolific seed producers,
said Mueen Suleiman Director of Agricultural Production
Department.
139, ooo palms grow in Deir Ezzor mainly in
Abu Kamal city due to the suitable hot dry atmosphere in the
region .Their cultivation increase at an annual rate of 10
percent and the governorate exports 12, 000 palm seedlings
to the other Syrian governorates every year.
Many common products and foods are derived
from palms, and palms are also widely used in landscaping
for their exotic appearance, making them one of the most
economically important plants.
In many historical cultures, palms were
symbols for such ideas as victory, peace, and fertility.
Their fruits have a nutritional value because
every date contains a lot of chemical elements necessary for
human body.
