Birds in the Syrian Coastal Region …Biodiversity and an Attractive Scene

Different migratory and endemic birds live in the Syrian Coastal Region where you can see flocks of them at its plains and mountains during the times of migration throughout the year.

This biodiversity indicates that wildlife and biological system in the coastal region are very rich, particularly after the extinction of many animal species on the international level that were threatened by many risks such as poaching.

According to Mazen Hmaidoush who is interested in breeding birds, there are many bird species living in the Syrian coastal region such as the Quail, locally known as al-Nuffaj ,and it is a small brown bird with a small head and short tail. Large flocks of Quail arrive in the region in March coming from Cyprus.

One of the pet birds bred by villagers in the coastal region is al-Hazzir bird (the prudent) and the reason behind its name is the fact that it is very prudent smart bird that couldn’t be caught easily.

Robin bird also lives in the coastal region and it has a dark brown color except its tail that has white lines .It is known for its quick movement and loud chirping that is similar to the warbling of nightingale.

The Robin lives mainly in the orchards, fields and forests and its basic food is the seeds of plants' fruits.

Fig bird is a migratory bird that arrives in the Syrian coast at the beginning of summer coming from Asia and Europe in small flocks building their nests close to each other where they stay until the beginning of October every year and then they immigrate southward.

Flocks of Starling bird immigrate to the region for finding the moderate atmosphere. The Starling bird is famous for its black feather and yellow beak which becomes grey in winter.

It lives in large flocks in trees cavities and cliffs and it is considered a pet bird bred for its beautiful appearance and its charming twitter.

Grouse birds that are known for their wonderful chirping and acrobatic movements tend to live in the coastal valleys away from people.

The quick nimble movement of these birds attracts people passing across the fields where they stop for watching their dancing and jumping that herald the coming of spring.

Partridge is a fat bird that has bright colors. It lives in couples and it is considered one of poultry birds in the coastal region that could be bred easily in special places.

The Blackbirds migrate to the Syrian costal region at the beginning of October every year and they feed on the fruits of olive, oak, laurel and other trees.

They adapt with low temperature in moderate winter where they stay at high mountains, particularly at al-Shaara Mountain that is the first place they stop at and after that they fly to  places located near rivers and lakes where they gather at the plains and forests in Lattakia countryside.

Other bird species live in the coastal region such as the sparrow, Woodpecker and goldfinch.
