International Conference on Cultural Pioneering Kicks Off

Nov 19, 2009

Damascus, (SANA) – The international conference on cultural pioneering and the Arab world (Cultural Leadership International) kicked off on Wednesday at the House of Art, with the participation of more than 80 pioneers of culture and arts from Arab and European countries.

Chairman of the Arab Language Empowerment Committee Mahmoud al-Sayyed said that dialogue and interaction are a characteristic of the modern world, which calls for flexibility in thinking and an understanding cultural diversity.

He pointed out that Syria respected the cultures of societies, appreciates innovation, believes in dialogue as a civilized means for resolving issues and protecting and restoring rights, and bolsters cooperation with sides that show positive initiatives.

Al-Sayyed noted that cultural development cannot be achieved in the region as long as the Israeli occupation of Arab lands continues, because development requires stability.

In turn, Director of the British Council in Syria Elizabeth White said that the conference provides an opportunity for intellectuals in the Arab nation and the world to exchange knowledge, experience and thoughts on developing cultural pioneering.

Damascus gives an extra dimension to the two-day conference due to its cultural and civilized standing, White added.

Activities of the first day discussed various cultural issues, including the elements that support or hinder cultural work, the participation of cultural centers, elevating culture to become behavior and awareness, the states of cultural access, the importance of establishing an Arab culture that believes in dialogue and respecting other cultures, and more.

Participants also discussed their personal experiences in various cultural fields, detailing the positive aspects and the difficulties they faced.

The international Conference on Cultural Pioneering and the Arab World continued its activities evening at the Arts House with a second session entitled Arts and the Economic and Social situation.

The second session of the conference dealt with the work environment of sophisticated people and the hegemony of institutional agendas, social tensions and the impact of these circumstances on actors and artists.

The international Cultural Pioneering project was initiated by the British Council and aims at boosting the role of art and culture in society.
