Nov 23, 2009 Gas…An Important Resource of Energy in Syria.
Gas is one of the most important natural resources in Syria due to the huge reserves explored in the country as production has increased from 2 in 1995 to 22 million cubic meters per day in 2009. It is used on a wide scale nowadays as an important resource of energy and Syria has been very interested in producing and investing it where it has taken many measures for increasing its production. Gas is very important product in Syria due to its economic value and the increasing demand on it in the sectors of electricity and industry . Syrian Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources is currently building three plants for processing gas in Palmyra, Ebla and in the central region. Jihar Plant in Palmyra, funded by Hayyan Oil Company and the Croatian Company of Ina, will be finished by 2010, and it aims at investing the fields of Muhr, Jihar and Gazal. The expected production capacity of the plant is estimated at 4 million cubic meters of clean gas, 180 tons of domestic gas and 5 thousand barrels of condensates per day. Ebla Gas Plant in al-Fouriqles region aims at investing gas in the fields of al-Shaar and al-Sharifa. The Plant is due to be accomplished by 2010. The expected capacity of the plant is estimated at 2, 5 million cubic meters of clean gas, 85 tons of domestic gas and 2 thousand barrels of condensates per day. The third project is a factory for investing the explored gas in the central region fields through developing them and building surface facilities. Production capacity of the factory is expected to reach 3 million cubic meters per day and it will be accomplished in 2010. The three projects along with Southern Central Region Gas Plant would supply Syria with 15 million cubic meters of clean gas, 20 thousand barrels of oil and 300 thousand tons of domestic gas per day. According to the estimates of the Ministry of Oil, these projects would support economic and social development plans where they would be carried out and invested through using the best international techniques by Syrian staff under the supervision of the Syrian Gas Company which qualifies the national cadres for carrying out these projects. Oil General Establishment produces from 22-23 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, a major part of this production is clean gas and 2,5 million cubic meters of gas is imported from Egypt through the Arab Gas Pipeline.
