Syria, RP to sign economic cooperation deals

DAMASCUS, Philippines (Xinhua) - Syria and the Philippines will sign a number of economic agreements in Manila, particularly in protecting and encouraging investments, the Syrian daily Tishreen reported Tuesday.

The Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah Al-Dardari and Presidential Political and Media Advisor Buthaina Shaaban are visiting the Philippines to discuss the bilateral ties with Philippine officials, the newspaper said.

The delegation will meet the President Arroyo, her senior advisors and a number of ministers for developing the projects discussed during the visit of Arroyo to Damascus in May 2009.

The two sides will sign an initial agreement of trade and technical cooperation, and discuss preventing double taxation between the two countries, said the report.

The relations between Syria and the Philippines are relatively new since the opening of Philippine embassy in Damascus in April 2009.
